The idea of Altra, created in 2009, was cooked up in a toaster oven. One of the co-founders, a running store manager and runner, discovered that traditional running shoes were hurting customers rather than helping them. He began experimenting, using the heat of a toaster oven to peel back the midsoles and remove excessive height. In the process, he created a “Zero Drop” profile for a low-impact landing.
